WikiReader Gets Updates to Touchscreen Keypad and More
Topic: Hot Gadgets
Openmoko has announced the spring update for its interesting WikiReader device. The little gadget is a wireless device that allows you to peruse the three million searchable Wikipedia entries that are in English. The new update's most important feature is probably the improved on-screen keypad that makes finding entries on subjects easier to do.
The keypad now has animated key presses with floating keys sort of like the iPhone. Presumably, that means that when you press a key it gets larger than the others so you can tell at a glance if you hit the right key. The update also adds improvements to navigation. Read more

JooJoo (aka CrunchPad) Surprises World, Enters Production
Topic: Hot Gadgets
It looks like the JooJoo might actually launch. Boy Genius reports that the device has entered production and will be shipping this month. A long legal battle between TechCrunch and Fusion Garage is still on the horizon but, for the time being, it looks like the JooJoo could be a reality. If you really want to risk ordering one, I'd suggest doing it after the first customers have received the product.
Fusion Garage also announced the imminent launch of an app store for the JooJoo. Since it looks like this tablet may now become a reality, the iPad may have its first legitimate competitor. The JooJoo is, in terms of hardware, at least the iPad's equal. It packs a 12.1” multitouch capacitive touchscreen, b/g WiFi, a 4 GB SSD, front-facing camera, accelerometer, integrated speakers, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The iTablet Launches, Packs Windows 7
Topic: Hot Gadgets
Yes, you read that right. X2 has just launched their latest product, the Window's 7-packing iTablet. (PMP Today) You have to give the company credit; that name was a gutsy, if ridiculous move. X2 clearly intends for their product to compete with the iPad. So...can it?
The iTablet runs off of a 1.6 GHz processor and comes in sizes ranging from 10.2” to 12.1”. It uses an HDD, which makes it very thick (35 mm) but gives it 250 GB of storage space. Outside of that we've got 3 USB ports, HDMI out, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a 1.3 MP webcam. The iTablet will also be available running Linux.

Chinese-made MIDs are a dime a dozen. Tons of itty-bitty Shanzai manufacturers roll out MIDs and PMPs of varying quality every day. In such a crowded market, it is difficult for any one device to rise above the herd. Motom's new M7 mobile Internet device (Cloned In China) might just be awesome enough to do so.

Scosche Introduces Solar Powered Back-Up Battery
Topic: Hot Gadgets
No device is as portable as one that can run on solar power. If you are a world traveler, you need to be able to keep your phone and computer running no matter where you go. Working power outlets will not always be available, but the sun shows up pretty much everywhere. That's why Scosche Industries have just launched a solar-powered back-up battery/charging device.
The solBAT II works with any handheld device that can be charged with a USB cable. It uses a two-light indicator to inform you of when the device is charging and when it is passing stored energy to a device. The solBAT II features a 1500m lithium-ion battery with a 5V output. It has a windshield mount and a carabiner mount, so it will always have the best view of the sun. Fully charged, the solBAT II can charge a "typical" phone up to twice.

The Tomato T99: PMP and Surveillance Camera
Topic: Hot Gadgets
Sometimes a manufacturer will decide to make a hybrid of two wildly different devices that don't really go together at all. Take the Tomato T99. It is a mini-media player, as well as a shadow-controlled surveillance camera. This little gadget sports a 1.3 MP camera that can be used to monitor an area. When it goes a minute without seeing any change in its surroundings, the camera turns off. As soon as it senses movement again, the camera activates.
