By Tarmo Virki
OSLO (Reuters) - Microsoft plans to continue charging licensing fees from
handset makers for using its mobile operating system and not follow the free
offerings of Google and Nokia, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said on Tuesday.
The pressure on Microsoft's high licensing fees has increased over 2008 with
Google rolling out free Android technology and Nokia offering to buy out others
from Symbian and also make its software royalty-free.

Mobile Phones for Tweens and Kids, flyPhone and glowPhone
Giving a cell phone to a younger child or a teen/tween is a good thing. It allows you to keep in touch with your child and makes it easier to know where they are, even if it's only within your neighborhood. The catch is that kids often don’t understand how a phone works and that using it too much can cost big money.
Firefly has a couple of new phones for kids that limit the people they can call and make it so parents can easily monitor the use of the phone. The new handsets are called the glowPhone and the flyPhone. The phones allow parents to limit the time the phones can be used and to limit text messages to only the numbers programmed into the phones memory. Read more

A new report from ad-ology shows that 60.5% of consumers who recently purchased a mobile phone said that online product reviews and user comments weighed significantly in their buying decisions. The reports show that 30% of people felt that blogs had the same level of influence on buying decisions.
Key findings showed that buyers likely to rate online blogs and reviews highly tended to be 18 to 34 year olds with higher than average incomes. 26.3% of buyers said they prefer to buy online rather than in a store. The price of the phone isn't as important to most buyers as the phone quality and the quality of the mobile network. Read more

Google and T-Mobile Make G1 Official
It's official, Google and T-Mobile have launched the G1 smartphone running Android. The phone looks very much like the T-Mobile Sidekick to me. The G1 features a touchscreen that slides to reveal a real QWERTY keyboard. The photo application allows users to frame a shot and drop it on the devices home page.
The music player built into the phone links to Amazon. The device uses Chrome Lite for surfing the web and is 3G enabled. The worst news is that the phone will be SIM locked to T-Mobile, this will rule it out in many parts of the country. T-Mobile coverage in my area is shameful. Read more

Wall St. Havoc Deals blow to Mobile Phone Makers
By Tarmo Virki
HELSINKI (Reuters) - Mobile phone makers and operators risk losing thousands of
their most profitable customers as financial havoc whacks the global banking
industry.
Analysts said the success of Blackberry-maker RIM is the most dependent on Wall
Street's future.
In worst case scenario 40,000 workers may lose their jobs in finance following
Lehman's collapse and problems at other big financial firms, New York Governor
David Paterson said earlier this week.
"RIM probably looks most exposed to any downside risk in this segment," said
analyst Neil Mawston from research firm Strategy Analytics, adding that also
Palm, HTC and HP could feel the pinch.

Google Android Phone T-Mobile G1 to be priced at $199
As reported the first Android Mobile phone will be unveiled at an event on the 23rd by T-Mobile. The Wall Street Journal reports that their sources tell them that the first Android powered smart phone G1 would sell for $199.
